Earth Care Team

To become certified as a PC(USA) Earth Care Congregation churches take the "Earth Care Pledge" and complete activities and projects in the areas of worship, education, facilities, and outreach.

As part of our commitment to be stewards of God's earth, the Session of APC unanimously re-affirmed its 2018 approval of the Earth Care Pledge on January 21, 2024.

Atascocita Presbyterian Church was pleased to receive Earth Care Congregation certification for 2018 and 2019. After being side-tracked during the pandemic, we were successfully re-invigorated our Earth Care efforts in April 2023 through the formation of a Team of dedicated volunteers, committed to the Earth Care Pledge. Our application for re-certification as a 2024 Earth Care Congregation was filed on February 3, 2024 and approved by the Presbyterian Church (USA) on February 29, 2024.

2024 is shaping up to be a busy year for the Earth Care Team:

  • community Garden After starting a Community Garden this past fall and getting the initial crop, our Community Garden Team is hard at work improving the soil and preparing for the spring planting (photo as of March 3, 2024). Plans are being made to provide part of the harvest to a local not-for-profit for distribution from their food pantry and to use the Roma tomato harvest for church members to use to prepare salsa for a competition to determine the best salsa recipe. This spring there will be an opportunity for you to sign-up to donate that extra rake, shovel, or other gardening equipment that you have just lying around to help our Community Garden Team gather the tools they need to continue to develop the garden.
  • Continued conversion of classrooms and offices to efficient LED lighting and the use of programmable thermostats to reduce our electricity consumption.
  • On Saturday, April 6 at 2:00 PM we'll celibrate with a Blessing of the Pets service in the G.A.T.E. area.
  • Bluebonnets On Saturday, April 13 we'll meet at Washington on the Brazos at 10:30 AM for a nature walk and an opportunity for us to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Bonnets blooming along the trail. Lunch will follow at a location to be determined.
  • We'll continue our monthly articles in the Communicator newletter and our weekly "blurbs" in the Narthex News.
  • We'll continue our Fifth Sunday worship focus (this year on March 31, June 30, September 29, and December 29) on Earth Care.
  • Plans are being developed are:
    • Alps a second pollinator garden, this one on the west side of the building to complement the one on the east side (photo as of March 3, 2024),
    • a seasonal Prayer Walk in the G.A.T.E.,
    • present seminars on interesting Earth Care topics such as composting, how to properly recycle, recipes and cooking classes using vegetables from our Community Garden, and
    • informational Narthex displays about Earth Care.

We encourage you to do your part as Stewards of our Earth and we'd love to have you as a part of APC's Earth Care Team. We generally meet in Room 102 (or via ZOOM, upon request) on the third Wednesday of each month at 5:30 PM. Consult the church calendar for our next meeting date or contact the church office for more information.
